The Longest Night of Museums – Exhibit 7

The Longest Night of Museums continues at full sail.

In our latest exhibit, you’ll visit the expansive halls and stunning exterior spaces of the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology, then explore the extensive collection and decommissioned warships of the Dutch Navy Museum.

What is the Longest Night of Museums?

Over the course of a month, we invite you to learn all about maritime and naval museums around the world through a series of informative articles. Many of these institutions participated in our first-ever event of this kind in last year’s 17-hour megastream tour. Unlock each article’s combat mission, and try your hand at winning an exclusive trip for two to the participating museum of your choice!

National Museum of Marine Science and Technology

Encompassing an area of over 500,000 square meters in the city of Keelung, the NMMST is more than just a museum. Besides its award-winning Museum Complex, it includes breathtaking highland viewpoints and numerous parks and trails.

The Museum Complex, which includes the Main Exhibition Building along with many other installations and open spaces, features detailed exhibitions pertaining to marine science, technology, ecology, and culture. Formerly the site of the Pei-Pu Steam Power Station, which was constructed during the Japanese occupation of the island, the Main Exhibition Building retains the original foundation and structure, which can still be seen today.

We invite you to visit and discover everything that the NMMST has to offer for yourself!

Our Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Gallery houses two decommissioned Mark 44 torpedoes. The Mark 44 torpedo is a propeller-operated active sound-tracking anti-submarine weapon formerly used by a variety of navies around the globe.

They could be ship-launched by above-water launchers or dropped by aircraft. Mark 44 torpedoes were intended to target submarines cruising at a speed below 24 knots and a depth between 50 to 900 ft.

  • Maximum speed: 30 knots
  • Operational range: 5.5 km

How has the last year been for your institution?

Due to the restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic, we intensified our use of digital resources online such as interactive e-learning and livestreaming. On March 25 this year, we also opened a new venue—Chaojing Intelligent Ocean (i OCEAN for short)—which combines emerging display technologies to create a 5G immersive experience and both AR and VR underwater tunnel adventures in Chaojing Bay.

The Longest Night of Museums event last year was a not just a thoughtful livestream session but also a dream come true for fans of warships! The sense of awe from coming face to face with a real and magnificent naval vessel in person is truly breathtaking. However, when doing so, you can only normally visit one ship at a time, and you may also have to deal with large crowds and strain your ears to try to hear your tour guides.

The Longest Night of Museums event last year completely eliminated these inconveniences while still preserving the overall experience of visiting a museum. By viewing the live tour given by museum tour guides, you can gain a great understanding of all these warships, both inside and out.

We were really touched by the wonderful interaction and feedback from the online audience during the event, and we are very grateful to World of Warships for giving us the opportunity to participate and allow museums to showcase their collections to a global audience. We look forward to seeing more events like this in the future that give viewers an opportunity to experience a real-life version of World of Warships!

Do you have any upcoming plans that you would like to share with us?

Between January 21 and November 20, 2022, we are hosting a special exhibition dedicated to the avian fauna of the region surrounding the NMMST. Nestled between tropical and temperate climate zones, our island is home to 674 species of birds, three-quarters of which are migratory. The diversity of birds on the north coast is testimony to the beauty of our natural environment.

Dutch Navy Museum

The Navy Museum houses 500 years of naval history. Get a close-up look at our extensive collection of ship models, weapons, and uniforms, and listen to the breathtaking stories of ex-Royal Netherlands Navy personnel.

You will discover the world of technology that powers the Royal Netherlands Navy, as well as learn all about navigation, sonar, radar, and propulsion. The “Stories from the Shipyard” exhibition will give you a glimpse into the daily lives of the people who worked at the National Dockyard right here in Den Helder.

The Navy Museum gives you the full Navy experience, above the waves and below. Climb through the hatch of submarine Tonijn, look through the periscope, and be sure to listen to the stories of our attendants—many of them have served on submarines themselves.

Aboard ramming ship Schorpioen or minesweeper Abraham Crijnssen, you will learn more about their fascinating naval careers.

And don’t forget to check out the bridge of former frigate De Ruyter, recognizable by the massive sphere on top of it. This sphere housed a powerful 3D radar capable of tracking 100 targets at a time within a 400 km radius.

Do you have any upcoming plans that you would like to share with us?

We are currently working on a new exhibition: Hidden Treasures. Paintings, model ships, ships’ decor, medals, furniture, weapons, ships’ bells, flags, clocks, sculptures, silverware, and trophies—objects that have been tucked away in repositories for many years—will now come under the spotlight. These treasures add color to the Navy’s history, allow you to experience Dutch maritime history up close, and demonstrate that the Royal Netherlands Navy is a unique branch of our country’s armed forces. Hidden Treasures will be open from July 11.
